Fugue in the key of understanding
Michelle had the privilege of participating in a professional curator program, instructed by 12 internationally renowned curators and sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The intensive 9-month program was designed for three selected curators, including Michelle, and covered an internship at the Queensland Museum. At the end of the program, the three curators were tasked with curating a group show, in which they had to choose their artists and create a cohesive exhibition.
Michelle named the show "Fugue in the Key of Understanding." Inspired by the musical form of "Fugue" in Bach's masterpiece, where a single theme is developed through the layering of diverse melodies, Michelle saw the three curators as "voices" in a fugue, each elaborating on the theme of "Understanding" through their curatorial interpretations.
For Michelle, her understanding of life was an "epiphany" and "enlightenment." She invited world-renowned artist Jun Ngygen-Hatsushiba's video work "The Ground, the Root, and the Air: The Passing of the Bodhi Tree" to be the featured artwork in the exhibition. The video work demonstrated that some individuals are enlightened to the fact that a peaceful mind is a foundation for tackling the rapid pace of social and economic changes. Michelle also invited Jun T. Lai of Taiwan to exhibit her work "Endless Love," which depicts the pursuit of navigating coordination in one's own life.
